The United Ostomy Associations of America, Inc. (UOAA) is a national network for bowel and urinary diversion support groups in the United States. Its goal is to provide a nonprofit association that will serve to unify and strengthen its member support groups, which are organized for the benefit of people who have, or will have intestinal or urinary diversions and their caregivers. The UOAA is dedicated to the provision of information, advocacy and service to, and for, its affiliated support groups, their members and the intestinal/urinary diversion community at large.
As 2012 approaches, the UOAA is preparing for WORLD OSTOMY DAY AND OSTOMY AWARENESS DAY. The date for this is 10-06-12. On this day, the UOAA will be conducting a Nationwide Awareness campaign and promote that all with ostomies encourage their friends and family to observe the life saving surgery that all had. Our goal during this time is to raise awareness, alleviate fear and educate the public as well as the medical professionals.
One of the biggest factors in ones decision to have ostomy surgery, often a matter of life or death, is based on the first impression left by the medical professionals and those around them= Stigma. There are many myths of ostomy surgery and it is the goal of the UOAA to disprove those myths and show that it can, often, enhance the quality of life for those who have chronic illnesses and save the lives of those facing acute situations.
The UOAA works to provide educational, informational and supportive materials to the, over, 325 Affiliated Support Groups Nationwide. We convene bi-annual conferences to promote educational seminars, support for those affected, and socialization with those who live with it daily.
